This can only really be given in a glass jar. Make sure you list all the ingredients inside on a label or tag.

Breadsticks

With breadsticks almost anything goes so long as you can get it to stick on the dough before baking. Flavoured oil is a lovely accompaniment to the breadsticks.

You will need

250 g (9 oz) strong flour

1 sachet dried yeast

3 tbsp honey

1 tbsp salt

160 ml (¼ pint) warm water

Selection of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, salt and dried herbs for topping

1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas mark 6 and grease two baking sheets. Place the flour, yeast, honey and salt in a mixing bowl then mix in the warm water until the mixture forms a dough. Knead for 10 minutes and then cover and leave to rest in a warm place for 1 hour. Knead again and divide into 24 small balls.

2 Roll each small ball into thin cigar-like shapes to the length of your baking tray. Place onto the greased baking trays and leave to rest again for half an hour. Using a pastry brush wet the tops of the sticks with water, twist and curve and sprinkle on the topping of your choice. Bake for 15 minutes or until just golden brown, watch carefully to make sure the sticks don’t burn. Cool on a wire tray.
